i dont know if am right ,but i think that you are very low on stats for you Overall points.
you should research olso the units.
this are my stats.

ttack strength (ATK): 14701 (+ 20)
Defense strength (DEF): 10462 (+ 13)
Total hit points (HP): 8150
Serfs: 60
Army size: 50/50

i reach the limits of my units today by obtaining the third fragment.no im forced to replace all my units below Skythes whit Archangel in some time (82 hours until i research Archangel).To upgrade my units at this moment is a wate of resources and gold.

The ATK/DEF research will be changed with the next game patch, which will hopefully here this week or next, so maybe you want to do a unit research first.

i give here an example of items on a lower unit :
ionut675 4x Bodyguard (1019 / 1062 / 1399 / 1449)
you need olso equipment or else there is no help in upgrading or changing units.
the research in atk and def are very good ,but is need to have a balans

@Gynde it will shorten the atk/def research time,but will increase the cost for them as well.As far as the info says the max research time will be 48h after update
