Crabs are more profitable than fish, but you can't always sell them, sometimes i have caught over a million. (lol)

The start of the game is all about getting enough imps to always have your buildings maximally staffed. First focus on wood/water/stone production (first 5 small, then 5 medium), and sell excess wood/water to other players, then you'll make a lot more gold than from the troll (i wish i did that, but i was stubborn and impatient). Stone is tough to sell, so that goes directly to troll. So you make gold to buy imps to make more gold to buy more imps to... etc etc. This is your first trial of patience :)

Other good moneymakers for later on are crabs, ore, leather. If possible, try to wait until the troll gives the highest possible price, the difference can really add up. Sometimes it helps to give the troll a good cursing.

With Respect....

Fish costs .1 gold to make and is a one step process and always sells for .4 gold. ( a 300% profit margin)


Crabs cost .4 gold to make and is a two step process and sells, generally from 1 to 1.2. To match fish, you need to sell crabs at 1.6.

have i been doing it wrong all the time?!

profit per fish .3 gold.

profit per crab 1g (max sell @ merchant is 1.4). And it's not a 2 step process, i'm not baking cakes :)

The Production thread says fish 30/hour and crabs 25/hour. I'll see tomorrow when my production is finished how much fish and crabs i can produce per day, and see what's more profitable. If Gendy is right, i'll have to smack myself, and my godfather, Hastuur. If Hastuur is right, can i smack you Gendy? With respect of course :D

Assuming a large fishing hut fully staffed with 30 imps with no production bonus:
30 fish per hour * 30 imps * 24 hours = 21600 fish
21600 * .1g per fish to produce = 2160 gold to produce
21600 * .4g per fish selling to troll = 8640g from troll
8640g -2160g = 6480g profit per large hut per day

Assuming a large fishing hut fully staffed with 30 imps with no production bonus and the troll buying crabs at 1.4g:
25 crabs per hour * 30 imps * 24 hours = 18000 crabs
18000 *.4g per crab to produce = 7200g to produce
18000 * 1.4g per crab selling to troll = 25200g from troll
25200g - 7200g = 18000g profit per large hut per day

BUT... In order to even produce crabs, you have to have your huts to medium. I assume this is the two step process GENDY is talking about, unless he was thinking about the Butchery's fish vs crab process instead. You can sell fish every single day to the troll, whereas you may be sitting on crabs for a good long time (ouch!). Also the crab numbers here are assuming the best possible price offered by the troll. So I'd guess the best thing to do depends on your level and your huts. Maybe go for a mix of the two? More fish at first when you need the regular, steady income, moving towards more crabs later when you need large amounts of money but can afford to hold stockpiles of goods until the troll decides to buy at a price you want to sell.

Those calculations seem to be correct. I dispute your humanity!

To expand Azmeera's math:
L Butchery, no bonus etc etc, numbers taken from Production thread.

40 dried fish per hour * 30 imps * 24 hours = 28800
BUT you can only produce 30 fish per hour, so also only 30 dried fish. If you buy from market it'll be more expensive and your profit will probably be gone or really small. So:
30 dried fish per hour * 30 imps * 24 hours = 21600
21600 * (.1g for fish + .8g for dried fish) = 19440 gold to produce

from Merchant prices thread:
"Dried fish (yuck): 1,25 / 1,38"

21600 * 1,25g per dried fish to merchant = 27000g income
27000 - 19440 = 7560g profit per large hut/butchery per day minimum
and
21600 * 1,38g per dried fish to merchant = 29808g income
29808 - 19440 = 10368g profit per large hut/butchery per day maximum.

- i assume we produce more than the merchant can manage timewise, like with stone, so my calculations are too optimistic.
- you can't produce any other stuff if your butcheries are busy drying fish 24/7, so they won't be producing dried fish 24/7, so my calculations are again optimistic.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but for me dried fish is out, and fish too. I'll stick with my crabs, even though i now have 3,3M of them now :O If you are a starting player, fish might be a better choice, because it's a steady income, like Azmeera said.
It always pays to have a large trout handy to slap insolent peasants around the ears with though.

EDIT: Hmmm, looking back at this post and all the calculations, i think Gendy's post made me come to the Nerd Side. Maybe he is my Father?

And I was looking at the greatest % or profit Margin.
